Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago tonight, as we all prepared for the new millennium, many events were taking place. I'll leave aside all the nutjobs storing food and gold, the y2k fears and just focus on the parties.
There were more parties that New Years Eve than I've ever know of, one of which was America’s Millennium Gala, the official presidential party. Living in DC it was the event to attend, IT took place at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial, and had limited VIP seating. The overflow stretched the entire length of the reflecting pool nearly to the Washington Monument. We somehow got VIP tickets, row 10 or 12. The Clintons were a few rows ahead.
The event was simply a once in a lifetime opportunity. The host for the night was Will Smith, produced by Quincy Jones and had more performers than I could have imagined. I'm posting the official program here, but my highlight was when none other than Slash, the once awesome guitarist from Guns and Roses. I got to shake his hand, which has lead to an entire decade of me making references to my good pal Slash.
No matter, it was amazing, the performances were nothing spectacular on their own, but in that setting, on that night and in that location, I will never forget where I was at midnight on January 1st 2000.
It was a great decade for me, I think they keep getting better. * Happy New Year and Happy New Decade.

This app could save your life!!

Safety Light from the Iconfactory's Craig Hockenberry is the only iPhone app anyone should own. Oh great another flashlight app, just what the world needs. Well step back my brothers and sisters, this one is for real.
I would describe the rich feature set, which I am sure includes the ability to brew coffee, a real live grappling hook and world peace, but I've not bought the application, so I can't!!

Airlock

A unique new application that uses bluetooth and your iPhone to secure your Mac. I'm currently using the demo to see if it is useful for me. A blurb from the creator is below

Airlock allows your Mac to lock itself, plain and simple. Using your iPhone or iPod Touch, Bluetooth, and a smidgen of pixie dust, Airlock determines whether you're near your computer. When you leave the room - poof! - your Mac locks itself. “And when I come back?” You guessed it: your Mac unlocks. You can also customize Airlock to perform specific actions as you come and go - have your computer talk to you, log-in or out of iChat, walk the dog, and such.

I spent some time with Airlock yesterday, I think there could be a real use for this product. Unfortunately the demo period was not long enough to make it useful for evaluating. If I had a full business day to try it out I might have been more inclined to purchase.
I'll be keeping my eyes on this as it evolves.

Tea, Coffee May Protect Against Diabetes - ABC News
Drinking lots of coffee and tea every day -- even decaf -- might keep diabetes away, new research shows.

This is good news for me. An excuse to drink more coffee. Attribute to ABC News

How Long Could Luke Survive in a Tauntaun?

How Long Could Luke Survive in a Tauntaun?
All good Jedi know that the best way to survive a snow storm is in the snugly belly of your nearest Tauntaun.

When I was 10 I thought it was longer, now I think that is a pretty good reprieve

Adding a second bit to FunctionSwitch

I've decided to divide the site into distinct content types (Thank you Drupal).
The primary content type will remain posts that are my creation, with little or no attribution to anyone else.
The post "Why Blog?" rides close to the line as it was inspired by another blog. The second content type will be attribution posts; interesting items I find and then either repost or post with commentary.
This is similar to what John Gruber does with Daring Fireball I can't and won't deny his influence on me. I had blogged before John went full time, but never consistently, I often look to John as a guidepost on what I am doing. I would love to achieve an inkling of his success (not material per say).
How the items will display I've not yet determined, but they are starting today.
Thanks
