Daring Fireball: Gizmodo and the Prototype iPhone

I've been rather silent on the missing iPhone and Gizmodo. I made a few comments on twiter but I've not had a lot to add to what is already out there. Daring Fireball has another great article regarding the iPhone and the role of Gizmodo.

The first question is, how did the phone leave Apple’s campus?

This is What a Tweet Looks Like

I never thought that the system was simple, but I've never given it much thought either. RRW has this great explanation of that goes into each tweet.

Think a tweet is just 140 characters of text? Think again. To developers building tools on top of the Twitter platform, they know tweets contain far more information than just whatever brief, passing thought you felt the urge to share your friends via the microblogging network. A tweet is filled with metadata - information about when it was sent, by who, using what Twitter application and so on.

December boys got it bad

Merlin Mann does the late Alex Chilton more justice than I could have. No matter if you are a fan or never heard of Alex Chilton of Big Star, this post give the goods.

Rest, we will miss your inspiration.

Even if he hadn’t written and performed about 10 of my favorite songs, Alex Chilton would still be a giant influence on me. The guy was a totally self-defined and unflappable contrarian.

Michael Vaughn Wants To Adapt Gaiman's Sandman

Oh I am so unsure of how I feel about this. Stardust was a fine movie, but it was a simple story comparatively.

Sandman was the comic that brought me back to comics. Reading Sandman was a very special part of my life and introduced me to one of my favorite authors.

If any outfit could give it the correct footing HBO is it.

Cameron Moll: Designer, Speaker, Author New Design, New Host, and Tumblr: How, Why

Cameron Moll on his site redesign and homage to Gruber.

The premise for this realign encompassed a concept that wasn’t original, but one that I felt better suited my style of blogging.

This style of blogging was most likely pioneered by John Gruber and has been repeated several times over by others since then.

Physicists Prove Teleportation of Energy Is Possible

This is exactly what I wanted to hear as 2010 started. No flying car, but real progress in bringing my Trek fantasies to life.

Over five years ago, scientists succeeded in teleporting information. Unfortunately, the advance failed to bring us any closer to the Star Trek future we all dream of. Now, researchers in Japan have used the same principles to prove that energy can be teleported in the same fashion as information. Rather than just hastening the dawn of quantum computing, this development could lead to practical, significant changes in energy distribution.

Some nice insights from Jeff LaMarche regarding a post from Gizmodo about the issues with the iPad

Gizmodo was very quick to put up a page denigrating the iPad. Generally, for a consumer device, I would view disapproval from Gizmodo as a good omen for future success1, but wanted to address their statements anyway.

My favorite bit

Why Apple’s new CPU Is So Important

Take a minute to read this insight from Dan Benjamin over at Hivelogic.

Why Apple’s new CPU Is So Important

Apple’s subtle mention that the iPad features a CPU of their own making, the A4, was actually the most exciting part of the whole announcement. It’s pretty important.

Conan O’Brien Says He Won’t Host ‘Tonight Show’ Following Leno - Media Decoder Blog - NYTimes.com

"Mr. O’Brien said ‘I sincerely believe that delaying the ‘Tonight Show’ into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. ‘The Tonight Show’ at 12:05 simply isn’t the ‘Tonight Show.’’"

I couldn't be happier with this statement. Thank you Conan, keep it up.
